Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar. In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on January 1st. People may go to parties, dress in formal clotheslike tuxedos (小礼服) and evening gowns, and drink champagne (香槟酒) at midnight. During the first minutes of the New Year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the New Year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the New Year with the first light of the sunrise. It is also a common Western custom to make a New Years promise, called a resolution. New Years resolutions usually include promises to try something new or change a bad habit in the New Year. Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the New Year can start afresh (重 新). Other common traditions to keep away from bad luck in the New Year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the New Year. Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the New Year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Years Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the New Year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck in the New Year. In the United States, some people eat blackeyed peas (豌豆) for good luckbut to get good luck for a whole year - 6 - you have to eat 365 of them! 24What does the underlined word “resolution” in Paragraph 3 mean? ASomething you say. BSomething you eat. CSomething you burn. DSomething you wear. 25What is the topic of the fourth paragraph? ABringing good luck. BRemembering the past. CPlanning for the next year. DKeeping away from bad luck. 26What can be inferred from the passage? ABlackeyed peas taste bad. BThe peas are very difficult to cook. COne pea brings one day of luck. DIt is bad luck to eat a lot of blackeyed peas. C Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a plan to improve the situation. Under the Velib plan (Velib comes from vlo libert, or bicycle freedom) people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first halfhour on the bike is free, but if you dont return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But its only 1 a day or 29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations! Paris is not the first city to have a plan like this. But not everybody thinks its a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they wont use a bicycletheyll still use their cars.” A city spokesman said, “The bicycle plan wont solve all our traffic problems, of - 7 - course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There arent any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.” 27What can we learn about the Velib plan? AIts bikes have no baskets. BIts bikes are light and colorful. CIt aims to make traveling easier. DIt owns more stations than the subway. 28If you use a Velib for 1 hour, how much should you pay? A. 1. B.30. C. 29. DNo money. 29Why do some people disagree with the Velib plan? AThe cost is rather high. BIts hard to find a Velib station. CIts not suitable for a long journey. DThe distance between two Velib stations is long. 30Whats the city spokesmans attitude towards the bicycle plan? ADoubtful. BPositive. CUncaring.
