One way they explain their ideas is to include examples which make the writers thoughts much more concrete, practical, and comprehensible to the reader. Without good examples, the reader is left with just theories that are too difficult to use and apply. Good examples can substitute for long explanations. The more complex the concept you are writing about, the more you should consider using an example. By giving your audience an example thats relevant to their situation, you help them relate to your writing.Learn thisLinking Words for Giving Examplesfor examplefor instanceto illustrateas an illustrationto give a clear exampletake, for example, such asnamelyLearn the best way to add examples to your essay to support your ideas. Find the metaphor in the lecture and write a metaphor of your own to explain an idea. The sentence using metaphor:Just as the poor passengers on the real Titanic saw the tip of the iceberg, what we see on the cinema screen is just the tip of the huge iceberg of film-making.Explanation:In this sentence, film-making is compared to an iceberg as they share some similarities. As we can see only a small part of a huge iceberg out of the ocean, what we see on the screen when seeing a film, is also just a small part of film-making. A huge amount of work lies unknown to the audience, just like the rest of the iceberg is hidden beneath the ocean. Using a metaphor, the film critic clearly conveys to the audience the large amount of work that has been done behind the scenes in film-making.A metaphor compares one thing to another without using “as” or “like”. It draws the readers attention to the similarities between two things. This way, unfamiliar things can be explained with something people are more familiar with. Examples of a metaphor Im drowning in a sea of grief. Here grief is so overwhelming that the person feels helpless, like theyre being pulled underwater. He broke my heart. Your heart isnt literally broken; youre just feeling hurt and sad. You light up my life. Of course, no one can provide physical light. This expression is simply saying that someone brings them joy. He is the apple of my eye. There is, of course, no apple in someones eye. The apple is someone held dear. She has such a bubbly personality. No ones personality can bubble up like a glass of champagne. This metaphor is used to signify someone whos especially cheerful. Hope is on the horizon. Hope is an intangible thing that doesnt bob along the horizon. This metaphor indicates good things are in ones future. In pairs, discuss the following questions.1 Why do you think the film critic asks a series of questions at the beginning of his lecture? To hook readers. To evoke emotions. To emphasize on a point. To make a smooth transition.2 What conclusions can you draw from the lecture?Film-making involves a lot of hard work behind the scenes.3 Do you support the use of CGI in films? Why or why not?No. I dont really like to see too much CGI in films. I think having a good storyline is the most important thing for a film, and sometimes technology can get in the way.4 What does the sentence “ theres always a lot more to it than first meets the eye.”Apart from the acting, the music and the amazing sets, there is a lot more hard work behind the scenes.5 Two directors, Peter Jackson and James Cameron, are mentioned as examples in the lecture. What qualities do you think a good director should have? Why do you think so? From the two directors mentioned in the lecture, I can see that to be a good director, one has to be creative. Take Peter Jackson for example, he was creative enough to come up with new ways of shooting special effects. Secondly, to be a good director, one has to be dedicated. James Cameron spent a lot of time researching the real Titanic in order to get its precise measurements and other important details before building the model that was used in his film. There are a lot of people working in the film industry. Fill in the flow chart below with different film-related jobs. Then add more film-related jobs to the chart.actor cameramancostume designer director film critic make-up artist production designer(美术指导)(美术指导) set designer sound engineer special effects engineer stuntman (特技演员)(特技演员) voice actor (配音演员)(配音演员)PreparationShootingPost-productionFilm releaseScriptwriter,Lighting engineer,Film cutter,Distributor, producercostume designer, production designer, set designeractor,cameraman,make-up artist, stuntmansound engineer, special effects engineer, voice actorfilm criticdirectorLearning topic-related wordsLearning vocabulary by topic helps you see the connection between words and phrases.
