To be able to talk about pandas . panda elephant Elephant - is 350 cm tall - weighs 5,000 kilos - eats 150 kilos of food a day Panda - is 150 cm tall (standing on two legs) - weighs 100 kilos - eats 10 kilos of food a day Compare facts about these two animals. Use the language in the box to help you make sentences. Example sentence: This elephant weighs many times more than this panda. 1a (200 cm taller / shorter, weigh much more / less, eat much more / less, eat many times more.) 1. This panda is 200 cm shorter than this elephant. 2. This elephant eats much more than this panda. 3. This panda eats much less than this elephant. For example: Look and guess Whats this? mouse? baby panda lizard? A baby panda is not black and white. What else do you know about pandas? Listen and learn. The Difficult Point: Describe the features of the animals fluently in English. Teaching Methods: Task-based approach, Communicative approach, Situational approach, Presentation. Teaching procedures: Step 1. Warming up Show a picture about myself. Get students to guess my weight and height. T: Look at this picture. Who is she? Can guess my weight and height? Step 2. Learning aims 1. To learn to use comparatives to compare facts about elephants and pandas. 2. Listen for specific information about numbers. 3. To be able to talk about pandas. Step 3. Try to describe the elephant and the panda using the information above. T: In our life, there are many animals. Which animal do you like best? Why do you like them? What animal only lives in China? What animal is the biggest on the earth? T: Describe the elephant and the panda using the information above. Ss: The elephant is 350cm tall. The elephant weighs 5000 kilos. The elephant eats 150 kilos of food a day. The panda is 150cm tall when standing on two legs. The panda weighs 100 kilos. The panda eats 10 kilos of food a day. . . . Step 4. 1a. Compare facts about these two animals. T: This time I put this two pictures together. Compare these two animals. Ss: In pairs , students describe the two animals by using comparatives. Then get some of them to describe. eg. 1. This panda is 200 cm shorter than this elephant. 2. This elephant eats much more than this panda. 3. This panda eats much less than this elephant. . . . Choose the animal you like better. Fill in the blanks. I like _ better. It is _ than the _. It weighs _ than the _. It eats _ than the _. Then share the writings in groups of four. Finally get some of them to describe. Step 5. Presentation and guess Look at the picture and guess what this is? (Its a baby panda.) What color is it? Is it black and white? Next lets watch a video. Step 6. Listening test. T: What else do you know about pandas ? Listen and learn. 1.1b. Listen and check. 2.1c. Listen again and complete the sentences. Ss: The baby panda cant see and he has no teeth. Pandas can live up to 20-30 years. Take turns telling your classmates about pandas. Then describe pandas together. Step 7. Watch a cartoon. (Tom and Jerry) T: The main characters in the cartoon? Ss: T: How much do you know about them? Ss: Show pictures about the characters. T: Which do you like better? Why? Ss: T: Fill in the blanks. Discussion T: In our life, some animals are endangered. To get a better life, what should we do to protect the animals ? Give us some advice and ideas.
