But “humane(人道的) treatment” means different things to different groups-and may not match what youd expect. Below, several labels are rated on how well they meet those expectations.(Note that the score for animal welfare shown below relates to chicken raised for meat.)USDA OrganicAnimal Welfare ApprovedOverall Score5Overall Score5Animal Welfare1Animal Welfare5Overall, this is one of the most meaningful labels a food can carry, indicating that producers stick to national standards requiring that animals be raised without added antibiotics(抗生素). But it falls short as far as animal welfare is concerned mainly because the Department of Agriculture hasnt introduced relevant rules on outdoor access. Standards for this label are set by a nonprofit group, A Greener World. Chickens must have access to the outdoors and be freely raised on family farms, meaning the farmer owns the animals. Painful procedures are forbidden, and birds must be stunned(打昏)before slaughter(屠宰). 学科网(北京)股份有限公司Certified Humane Raised & HandledAmerican Humane CertifiedOverall Score4Overall Score3Animal Welfare4Animal Welfare3Humane Farm Animal Care, a nonprofit, monitors this label. Outdoor access isnt required, but birds are given slightly more room than the industry norm and living conditions are carefully controlled. An “animal welfare officer” must monitor slaughter to ensure that proper procedures are followed. Under this label from the nonprofit American Humane Association, outdoor access isnt required and indoor space can be minimal. Birds must be given at least 4 hours of continual darkness, which is more than required but less than what some other animal welfare programs ask for. 1 2 3 4 5Worse- - - - - Better1. In which section of a magazine will this passage appear?A. Science news.B. Financial reports.C. Consumer guidance.D. Animal kingdom.BAround July I had made a purchase from a website in the US. My shipment was sent out the very next day, and I expected the package to arrive at my doorstep within 5 to 7 days like before. Two weeks had passed, and I had not received my package. I decided to track it, and to my shock, the courier (快递公司)actually sent my package to a different country!I didnt know what to do, so I emailed the courier, who told me I had to email the company from which I had made the purchase. Instead of helping me, the company redirected me to the courier. Rather than getting mad at this entire mess, I tried to calm down by focusing on the good things, those like the fact that I even had the money to make the purchase and that the company shipped out the package rather quickly. I also imagined myself receiving the package, which made me happier. Weeks turning into months, there was still no sign of my package. As I signed up for updates, I was horrified when I woke up one day in September to see that my package had been returned to the US. Instead of getting depressed, I contacted the company to inform them about the shipment and sought advice about what to do next as I really wanted the items which were a limited edition. The customer service told me that they could only offer a full refund (退款)as the items were already sold out. Even though I accepted and was very pleased, there was still a part of me that was slightly disappointed.Around the end of November, I received a text update that my package has cleared customs in the UK but I thought it had been returned to the company. Yesterday, my package arrived at my doorstep! While it did take many months for the package to reach me, I felt incredibly grateful as I got what wanted! And for free! This showed me that the universe works in mysterious ways that we can never really understand but it is not our job to worry about how things will unfold.4. What does the story intend to tell us?A. Good things come to those who wait.B. Time and tide wait for no man.C. Where there is a will, there is a way.D. Chance only favors the prepared mind.CMore time spent indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused a significant rise in childhood short-sightedness, according to a new Hong Kong study. The findings were based on the current Hong Kong Children Eye Study, which continually researches the eye conditions of children aged six to eight. The study found that 19.5 per cent of the 709 six-year-old pupils admitted at the start of the pandemic(between December 2019 to January 2020)developed short-sightedness over the course of eight months. The overall estimated one-year incidence of short-sightedness for them was 28 per centmuch higher than the 17 per cent found in children studied pre-pandemic.The researchers note that these changes corresponded with a reduction in the time the children spent outdoorsfrom around 75 minutes a day pre-pandemic to 24 minutes during the pandemic.Screen time among the children also dramatically increased during this period, from two and a half hours a day, to seven hours. The authors highlight that this data relied on questionnaires, which could impact the accuracy of the research. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司Also, as it was a local study to Hong Kong, the researchers couldnt say whether the same results would be seen in children in other provinces of China. Despite all these unavoidable study limitations, our initial results still show an alarming short- sightedness progression that requires appropriate correctional action, the researchers concluded.James Huang, professor of optometry (视光学) at Hong Kong University, who did not take part in the research, told CGTN During the pandemic, lifestyles have changed, such as the amount of time spent viewing digital screens, homeschooling and the duration of time spent outdoors. At least nine peer-reviewed published studiesnot including this new Hong Kong study-have identified an increase in short-sightedness progression during the pandemic.Fortunately, though, the effect may not be permanent. One study found this short-sightedness progression was turned back partially after lockdown, suggesting that both eye focus spasm (痉挛) and structural changes contributed to this accelerated rate, explained Huang.8. What can we learn from the study?A. Decreased time outdoors impacted childrens overall health.B. A majority of new primary students were already short-sightedC. Children with short-sightedness were rising during the pandemic.D. The eye conditions of Hong Kong teenagers were not affected at all.9. The underlined word them in Paragraph 3 refers to_.A. eye conditionsB. six-year-olds surveyedC. children studied pre-pandemicD. the findings of the study10. Why do the authors consider the study somewhat inaccurate?A. Only children aged six to eight are included in the study.B. The exact cause of short-sightedness remains unknown.C. It fails to involve experts from professional organizations. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司D. It depends on questionnaires collected locally in Hong Kong.11. According to James Huang, how will the problem change in the future?A. There is no turning back of short-sightedness progression.B. It will keep worsening until eye focus spasm can be solved.C. Short-sightedness is likely to be relieved after the lockdown.D. The problem will be automatically and completely solved.DAbout a year ago, my partner and I got a little black and white cat. We called her Hashtag and a parental instinct(本能)in my body kicked in. If I dont see Hashtag for a While, I worry that something terrible has happened to her. Thus, I bought a tiny tracker made by a company called Tile, which attaches to her collar, It meant that even if I cant see her. I can pull out my phone and connect to Tile using Bluetooth. If the connection is made successfully, it means that she must be nearby. But there was still a problem: what if Hashtag were to get out of the house and run further away? Bluetooth range only extends to around ten meters, so any further and her location would be a mystery. This is why I was delighted when earlier this year Apple released the AirTag, its own Bluetooth tracker. AirTags work the same way as Tile. But Apple has added a twist: instead of just using your own iPhone to look for your own trackers, every iPhone in the world works together to find tracking tags(追踪器). This means even if you personally arent in range of your AirTag, as long as theres an iPhone nearby, you can see updates on where it is-and more importantly, where your cat, keys, or whatever you have attached to it are. As you can probably tell, I find this new technology strangely mind-blowing. Apple has created an entirely new, massive network of physical objects that covers pretty much the entire world. And, slightly scarily, it is only possible because there are a billion iPhones out there. Though Samsung has announced a similar tracking product that uses its phones, it wont have the same reach as Apples network in the short term. In the not-too-distant future, itll be the case that everything we buy of certain value that we might lose will have an AirTag built in. Your headphones, your fancy camera, your suitcase, and so on. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司So, if Hashtag ever does escape, then at least I can invite the entire world to help look for her.12. How does the author express her affection for Hashtag?A. By telling a specific story.B. By detailing her caring actsC. By giving it a nickname.D. By using a comparison.13. According to the author, in what way is the AirTag better than the tiny tracker by Tile?A. Every iPhone is uniquely connected to its AirTag.B. Apple provides better customer services than Tile.C. An AirTag covers larger range than its opponents.D. iPhones throughout the world can help track tags.14. Which of the following statements is true?A. AirTags success is quite difficult to copy.B. Samsung has posed much challenge to Apple.C. Its a long way before AirTag gains popularity.D. Overuse of AirTags makes a mess of our life.15. What is probably the best title for the passage?A. Say no to trackersB. Lost and foundC. No worries for pets.D. To track or to follow. Making and breaking habits isnt just a matter of willpower. _16_ These three steps can really help, says psychologist Wendy Wood, the author of Good Habits, Bad Habits. _17_ If you are worried about a task, youll be far less likely to take it. _18_ Wood suggests pairing a not so-enjoya
